Signs of Termite Activity

Termites cause major damage, and in Texas, we have a lot of termites.  Each species of termite maintains specific characteristics differentiating one type from another.  Correctly identifying any one of the five destructive species provides the appropriate control program. The five species are:

  1. Eastern Subterranean Termites
  2. Arid-land Subterranean Termites
  3. Formosan Subterranean Termites
  4. Western Dampwood Termites
  5. Desert Dampwood Termites

The ecological benefits of termites includes the breaking down of rotting, woody material which adds nutrients to the soil.  However, they’re not particular about their food.  For instance, they don’t differentiate between homes, other buildings, or fallen trees.  If you don’t catch them early, they can completely destroy your home or business. Know the warning signs that point toward termite activity.

Signs of Termite Activity

Watch for sawdust around walls or foundations.  This could be the remains of termite activity.  When a termite becomes full, it simply continues to chew the wood, leaving sawdust in its wake.  Brick and cement don’t stop greedy termites.  No wood item is safe, including cupboards, flooring, window sashes, and door frames.  They chew through joists and any wood product of any kind.

Watch for muddy “veins” on the soil near your foundation.  Subterranean termite varieties live in damp, loose soil.  These termites build their mud tunnels from their own feces and saliva.  They are less conspicuous than their more aggressive African cousins.  However, they still cause substantial damage.  Damage doesn’t become apparent until a full-blown infestation has attacked.  The damage first appears as water damage.  Later, you find buckling wood and swollen ceilings or floors.
